Refractive Error
Refractive errors are the most common type of vision problem. According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), nearly 150 million Americans have some form refractive error — surprisingly, many patients are unaware that they have the potential to see much clearer. Hyperopia (farsightedness), myopia (nearsightedness), astigmatism, and presbyopia are all common refractive errors that can be corrected in many different ways.
If the cornea is shaped irregularly your eye focuses objects on two different areas of the retina. This is called astigmatism. Normally the cornea is dome shaped to focus light correctly. The cornea is more football shaped with astigmatism.
As you age a condition called presbyopia can occur. This causes a reduced ability to focus on objects close to the eye. A natural consequence of aging.
Most people use the term nearsightedness, but the medical term is Myopia. A condition that causes a person to only see objects which are close. Myopia typically develops in early childhood. To understand more about Myopia Management please click here
