Macular Degeneration
Macular Degeneration (AMD) is an eye disease affecting the central vision. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an estimated 1.8 million people have AMD and another 7.3 million are at substantial risk for vision loss from the condition.
There is no known cure for macular degeneration and the disease can sneak up on you gradually over time. This is why regular exams with your optometrist are so important. The damage caused by AMD is not reversible and the disease will only get progressively worse without treatment.
Risk Factors and Other Variables
Multiple risk factors exist, some include:
Age, most people associate macular degeneration with the aging process, although this is a factor, our eye doctors want you to know that the disease can manifest itself at any age.
Race is a factor when it comes to AMD, as African Americans and Hispanics are more likely to develop AMD than people who belong to other ethnic groups
It may be heredity, If you have a family history of this, it does not guarantee yo will develop it, but your chances are higher.
People who smoke are two times more likely to develop AMD in their lifetimes. It is important to note that nicotine is a vasoconstrictor, which means it decreases the supply of blood to your eyes.
UV light exposure and poor nutrition can also be contributors to Macular Degeneration.
